Established in 1997, Forensicare is a dedicated state-wide specialist service providing quality forensic mental health services. 2017 brings us exciting changes as we significantly expand our services across our prison and hospital services.

 

Due for completion in late 2017, the Ravenhall Correctional Centre (RCC) in Melbourne’s west, is an exciting new development with a purpose-built forensic mental health facility. This facility will:

  • dramatically improve the care of mentally ill offenders in Victoria’s prison system,
  • significantly expand the capacity and scope of our organisation; and
  • offer unique opportunities for our staff to advance their professional skills in line with world-class clinical and mental health service provision.

About the role

A Peer Worker is employed on the basis of their personal lived experience of diagnosed mental illness and Recovery.  Peer mentoring happens in every corner of the world in many forms and has become increasingly popular in the mental health and drug and alcohol fields with peer workers recognised as having a positive impact on client Recovery. When working with people with mental health problems it is commonplace to listen to the views of individuals and groups with experience of using the services designed to help.

Although not essential, it is desirable that the Peer Worker has also lived experience of the criminal justice system in addition to the mental health system.

 

Skills and experience

  • Personal lived experience of mental illness and demonstrated experience of Recovery.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer Recovery.
  • Experience in, and commitment to, working successfully with service providers and other consumers in mental health services.
  • Demonstrated involvement with the mental health system as a consumer.
  • Ability and commitment to work with consumers, in consultation with members of the multidisciplinary team, broader prison services, and community organisations.
