Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community.

 

The primary focus of this work is on providing clinical services for the effective assessment, treatment and management of forensic patients and clients and people with a mental illness who have offended or are at risk of offending. We are committed to providing Recovery-orientated forensic mental health services in which the principles of hope, social inclusion, personalised care and genuine collaboration are fundamental to practice.

These services are delivered through three streams, inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and prison based services at several locations.
Thomas Embling Hospital is a 116 bed secure hospital providing acute care, rehabilitation and continuing care services.

 

About the role:

The Principal Psychologist provides a high level of clinical leadership and management of the psychology service at Thomas Embling Hospital. They are responsible for the leadership, supervision and training of Psychologists within the Thomas Embling Hospital. In collaboration with the Director of Psychological Services, they ensure the effective planning and development, recruitment, selection, training and deployment of psychology resources across Thomas Embling Hospital. The position also contributes to service planning and development and provides expert consultancy and advice to Forensicare management, other agencies and key stakeholders. 

 

Duties:

  • Coordinate, promote, champion and lead psychology service development processes at Thomas Embling Hospital with demonstrable benefits for patients and the organisation.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Psychological Services ensures the effective planning and development, recruitment, selection, training and deployment of psychology resources across Thomas Embling Hospital
  • Provides specialist psychological assessment, treatment and consultation to address the mental health needs of patients
  • Provides high level consultation, advice and support to Forensicare clinicians on the management and treatment of complex client issues.

 

Qualification, skills and experience:

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Masters or Doctoraral qualification in Clinical Psychology from an APAC accredited course or equivalent or Doctoral qualification in Forensic Psychology from an APS accredited course or equivalent.
  • Endorsement or eligibility for endorsement by the Psychologists Registration Board of Australia, in the area of clinical and/or forensic psychology.
  • Listed as a registered supervisor (or eligible for being so listed) with the Psychologists Registration Board of Australia.
  • At least ten years’ experience in providing a high level of services in forensic mental health and related settings (Preferable).
  • Demonstrated ability in the provision of strategic advice in relation to service development and practice within a complex organisational setting.
