Established in 1997, Forensicare is a dedicated state-wide specialist service providing quality forensic mental health services. 2017 brings us exciting changes as we significantly expand our services across our prison and hospital services.


Due for completion in late 2017, the Ravenhall Correctional Centre (RCC) in Melbourne’s west, is an exciting new development with a purpose-built forensic mental health facility. This facility will:

  • dramatically improve the care of mentally ill offenders in Victoria’s prison system,
  • significantly expand the capacity and scope of our organisation; and
  • offer unique opportunities for our staff to advance their professional skills in line with world-class clinical and mental health service provision.

In September 2017, Forensicare will also become the provider of specialist Forensic Mental Health (FMH) Services at Port Phillip Prison. This includes the 30 bed psychosocial rehabilitation unit (St Paul's Unit), clinical support to three observation cells on the unit, specialist consultations to the Outpatient Service and after hours crisis assessments to Prisoners at risk.


About the role

The Family & Carer Advocate promotes service responsiveness to the needs of families and carers and engages in contact with carers and families of patients of FMH services at RCC and PPP services to provide support, information and referral.

The position works collaboratively with other local support groups, makes appropriate referrals and gathers information that facilitates the provision of information and support to families/carers.

The Family & Carer Advocate Provides education and information on family/carer experiences, needs and support to mental health staff, community groups and other relevant services as required and upholds the dignity and rights of families, carers and consumers while respecting privacy and confidentiality at all times. The position is also a core member of the Family Sensitive Practice Committee.


Skills and experience

  • Direct personal experience as a family member or carer of a person with a mental illness and/or prison experience.
  • Broad understanding of the differing perspectives of the impact of mental illness and prison on families, carers and the consumer.
  • Good knowledge of the prison and/or mental health service system and issues that families and carers face.
  • Understanding of the diversity of the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our community, and the impact this has on consumers' and carers' experiences of mental illness and/or prison.
  • Awareness of current issues and directions in mental health.
  • Understanding of rights and legislation affecting the mental health sector.
